Statutory Rates: Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage is the minimum pay per hour almost all workers are entitled to by law.

It doesn’t matter how small an employer is, they still have to pay the minimum wage.

The minimum wage rate depends on a worker’s age and if they are an apprentice:

  • 21 years old and over - £6.19
  • 18-20 years old - £4.98
  • Under 18 years old - £3.68
  • Apprentice* - £2.65
  • Accommodation offset - £4.82

The following rates will come into effect on 01 October 2013:

  • 21 years old and over - £6.31
  • 18-20 year old - £5.03
  • Under 18 years old - £3.72
  • Apprentice* - £2.68
  • Accommodation offset - £4.91

*This rate is for apprentices under 19 or those in their first year. If you’re 19 or over and past your first year you get the rate that applies to your age.
